The wonderful children's musical, The Wizard of Oz, has captivated its audiences for well over a half-century. As the principal characters journey to Oz to consult the wizard, it is their hope that his wisdom will provide the means to each securing their fondest desire: a brain, a heart, courage, and a way to get home to Kansas.
Upon their arrival in the Emerald City after many trials, they endure one last obstacle: how to get an audience with the "Great Oz.” They are quizzed at the door and despair of ever attaining access. Finally, not only do they enter, but they get a glimpse behind the curtain that reveals the true Oz. The great wizard is merely an aging flim-flam man, who has everyone fooled. Despite his not matching their expectations of a wizard, however, he is able to reveal to each of them how to achieve what they seek.
It is a key point in Mark's Gospel that the Messiah's identity is revealed, not announced. The Messiah in Mark's Gospel challenges the expectations of all and his identity is only truly revealed in the suffering of the cross as a centurion utters, "Surely this man was God's Son” (15:39).
