The word of the Lord...

The word of the Lord to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, as that word is expressed in the first 14 verses of Exodus 12, is a marvelous example of the manner in which God expresses the Divine will. Throughout the wording of Exodus 12:1-13, provision is made with notable specificity for the observance of the first Passover for "the whole congregation of Israel." The detail for food preparation, manner in which the food is to be eaten, attire to be worn, and the Lord's intent to deal in judgment is explicit. Verse 14 provides a trinitarian overview -- a three-faceted reason -- for this first Passover, and for its continuation. Consider the words the NRSV uses to state the Lord's intent: a day of remembrance (14a), a festival to the Lord (14b), and a perpetual ordinance (14c). Clearly, when Jesus broke bread and celebrated the Passover that Thursday night so long ago, he provided Christians with a new opportunity for remembrance, festival, and ordinance. -- Saxon
