A writer once spoke of his "starving artist" period as a young man in a large city, and described a time when he was without food for several days. "Actually," he said, "it wasn't all that difficult to be without food. After the second day my stomach seemed to adjust to the emptiness. What was more difficult, however, was my need for cigarettes. I craved tobacco far more than food, and, in fact, if I could have had the choice between a pack of cigarettes and a loaf of bread, I would have easily chosen the cigarettes.
