As young children, and even as teens and adults, we
sometimes believe that the world revolves around us. We expect
our needs and wants to have precedence over the needs of other
people. We want those who love us to focus their energies on us,
to live their lives around us, to make us the center of their
worlds.
Until rather recent discoveries in astronomy, scientists
(and the general population) believed that the sun, moon, and
stars revolved around the earth. As inhabitants of the planet
