John’s gospel paints a striking portrait of the resurrection’s aftermath -- the disciples, terrified that the authorities will barge in at any minute and arrest them for being fellow travelers with Jesus, have locked their doors and essentially gone into hiding. They’re wracked with fear and doubt as they process their conflicting emotions: grief over the crucifixion, joy at the resurrection, anxiety about their safety.
