(Editor's note: This is a continuation of the theme used in
the second lesson from Proper 20.)
Good morning, boys and girls. Do you remember my friends Ned and Ted who we met last Sunday? (Show your two decorated fingers.) This morning I brought two more friends with me. This one is Ashley. She is always willing to help others. (Show the right one and call it any name you wish.) This one is Jessica. She is never willing to help others. (Show the left one and call it any name you wish.)
The Bible story this morning reminds me of Ashley and Jessica. In the story Paul is continuing to write from prison to Christians. In his letter he is giving Christians advice on how to live their lives. He is encouraging them to live good lives. He says to treat others the way Jesus would treat others. I'm going to tell you about Ashley and Jessica. When I'm finished, you tell me which one is treating others the way Jesus treated others.
First, I'll tell you about Jessica. (Hold up the unfriendly finger face.) Jessica never helps others. Once someone spilled her milk in the cafeteria. Jessica could have helped clean it up but didn't. She makes certain that she is always first in line to go down the slide at recess. When someone brings a toy to play with at school, she always says that she has a better one at home.
Now, I'll tell you about Ashley. (Hold up the friendly finger face.) Ashley always helps others. When the girl spilled her milk in the cafeteria, Ashley got some napkins and helped clean it up. Ashley is always taking turns. At recess, she lets younger children in front of her to go down the slide. She tries to share toys with her friends, when she is playing.
Now, which one is doing as Paul suggested? Which one is treating others the way Jesus would treat others? (Let them answer.) This week, remember Ashley and Jessica. When you have a chance to treat others the way Jesus would treat others -- that means helping others, not always being first in line, and caring for others - do it!
