Illuminating God's Message To The World
Applications For Contemporary Life
Images of salt and light hold center stage in this short pericope at the outset of the Sermon on the Mount. The parable expresses in general the need for Jesus' apostles, and by extension all his followers, to live lives which enhance society, as salt gives flavor to food, and to illumine the world with the teachings of Christ, as a light brightens a darkened room. Today our world suffers from personal and communal sin which makes society unappealing and uninviting to the Christian. Society also suffers from the darkness of ignorance that obscures the teachings of Christ.
