Stories Around The Baby
Sermons and Children's Lessons For Advent and Christmas
What is at the very center of Christmas? (Various answers - wait for "the baby," or "the baby Jesus. ")
Yes, the baby Jesus is at the very center of Christmas. He is the center of Christmas. All the music and the lights, the Christmas trees, the Christmas cards, the Christmas parties -
these all come from the fact that God sent a special baby to earth on that first Christmas - a baby who grew up to be the Savior of all people.
But you know, Jesus was not the first baby whose coming was God's idea. In fact, I think every baby's coming is God's idea. I even think God has some special thing in mind for each of you, for all of us, to be and do, and that's why we each one are God's ideas.
But long before Jesus, there was a baby whom God seemed to look after very carefully. We're going to talk more about him this morning, but I want you to know his name and one or two things about him so that when we tell his story later, you will know what to listen for. His name was Moses. He was born in Egypt long ago. Little Hebrew babies born in Egypt at that time were in danger from soldiers. But Moses' mother and his sister - whose name was Miriam - were very clever. They made a floating boat and put the baby Moses in it so that he would float in the river to where the king's daughter was bathing. Moses' mother and Miriam knew that if the princess saw the baby, she would protect him.
And that's what happened. Not only that, but the princess decided to take him home with her and she asked Moses' mother to come along and look after him. Moses grew up in the king's palace, but when he was grown, he went back to his people, to the Hebrew people, and he led them out of Egypt and he taught them about God and showed them the great land where God had planned for them to live. Listen later, and I'll tell more of the story of the baby Moses.
