An advent announcement for all
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
An advent announcement for all
Gospel Note:
Among the Synoptic evangelists, Luke goes to the greatest length to pinpoint the appearance of John the Baptist within world history (probably between A.D. 27 and 29). He also quotes more of Isaiah 40 than Mark or Matthew, extending it so as to conclude with the claim ''all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'' The distinctiveness of Luke's account, therefore, is the universal scope in which he sees the message of the Gospel and of its forerunner from the very beginning.
Liturgical Color:
Blue or purple
Suggested Hymns:
(Stanza 3) Love Divine, All Love Excelling
Prepare The Royal Highway
Comfort, Comfort Now My People
Let Us Ever Walk With Jesus
Oh, That I Had A Thousand Voices
10
Advent 2
O Lord, our Creator, you are always faithful to
your promises.
John the Baptist heralded the arrival of
the long-awaited Messiah.
As we wait for his promised return in glory,
we often walk through crooked places which cry
out to be made straight.
We frequently stumble into rough places which
need to be made smooth.
People abuse people.
Streets are unsafe.
Values are determined by majority vote.
Ethics are shaded by the ''bottom line.''
There are times when we lose our sense of direction
and we are drawn off the course which you have
set before us.
Yes, we are waiting, Lord!
Transform our waiting into creative waiting.
Let our waiting be characterized by:
Authenticity!
Compassion!
Self-giving!
Joy!
Lord, empower us to be faithful to our promise.
We want to serve you.
Amen.
