Awaiting the power that authenticates
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Awaiting the power that authenticates
Gospel Note:
This version of the ascension of Jesus is not as detailed as Luke's other one in Acts 1, but gives generally the same picture. Jesus sets before them a tremendous task, namely the preaching of repentance and forgiveness to the world. But, lest they act precipitously, he counsels them to return to Jerusalem to await the divine power (in Acts it is specifically the Spirit) that will authenticate their efforts.
Liturgical Color:
White
Suggested Hymns:
Up Through Endless Ranks Of Angels
Look, The Sight Is Glorious
Lord, Enthroned In Heavenly Splendor
A Hymn Of Glory Let Us Sing!
And Have The Bright Immensities
At The Name Of Jesus

The Ascension Of Our Lord
Lord God, we are looking up into heaven today. Our eyes
are straining to see Jesus!
The struggle between faith and doubt is
smoldering within our souls and we are looking
for assurance.
We are looking for answers.
Clouds still obscure our view.
Could it be that we are looking for Jesus in the
wrong places?
Lord God, shift our gaze from heaven to our
immediate surroundings.
Open our minds to see you most clearly in the
needs of the people we meet.
Open our minds to understand the scriptures and
resolve the struggle between doubt and faith.
We are ready, Lord.
We are ready.
Amen.
