You may have seen a backhoe in operation. It is a form of the power scoop shovel which works in the opposite direction, to dig out a trench or clean out a ditch.
A member of our rural church operated a backhoe for a living. When asked if he liked his work, he surprised me.
"Yes, I do," he replied. "I take the machinery to the place needing it and begin working. It may be a drainage ditch I am to open. When I start, the ditch is a mess, clogged up with debris and stagnant water."
He continued, "It is a joy for me to see what happens when the ditch is cleared of its rubble. The water starts to flow again, and soon it is all clear. The drainage can go as it should. The work with the backhoe has made it possible, and I am satisfied."
What an illustration that is of the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit, who can remove the obstacles that hindered God's power to flow into our souls.
