Baptism Of Our Lord
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Isaiah 42:1-9
Theme: Chosen
Call To Worship
Leader: What brings you to this place today?
People: Knowing that we too are chosen, we come as people seeking strength and courage.
Leader: May God be with you in your search.
People: May God be with us all.
Collect
The echo of Jesus' baptism resounds in our own baptism. So close is God to us -- God who gives breath and spirit to those who walk on earth. God has taken us by the hand, both as God's chosen and as those in whom God's soul delights. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Holy Creator, Parent, give us the boldness to greet the touch of your hand with an eager step. Persist, O God, when you declare to us your promises and our actions hint, "So what?" Give us the determination to avoid lagging behind as we feel the pull of rebellion. Help us quiet the defiance of not wanting to be held accountable. Keep us from dodging the responsibilities of having been chosen as your people. Amen.
09A Hymns
"[All][He] Who Would Valiant Be" Tune: ST. DUNSTAN'S
"[O Morning Star How Fair And Bright][How Brightly Shines The Morning Star]" Tune: WIE SCH…N LEUCHTET

Baptism Of Our Lord
Second Lesson: Acts 10:34-43
Theme: Unbiased
Call To Worship
Leader: God shows no partiality in accepting us. Anyone, anywhere, who believes in God and does what is right when the choice of doing good or evil presents itself, is acceptable to God.
People: That includes us.
Leader: That includes us. It also includes those with views differing from ours,
People: And those with whom we utterly disagree.
All: God is God of us all.
Collect
We are here, O God, to learn more about the law of love. Teach us so we will be stronger in choosing love over disdain, acceptance over rejection, tolerance over prejudice, and right over wrong. In Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Forgive us, God, when we act as if we were an exclusive club. We would like to be as fair and accepting as Jesus, but usually our ways are not your ways. We hate to give in and forgive others. Sometimes forgiveness seems impossible. Help us follow Jesus' example. In his name. Amen.
09A Hymns
"All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name" Tune: CORONATION or MILES LANE
"Your Ways Are Not Our Own" Tune: SCHUMANN
"Once To Ev'ry Man And Nation" Tune: EBENEZER
Baptism Of Our Lord
Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17
Theme: Baptized
Call To Worship
Leader: You are baptized.
People: Baptized -- launched to begin, to start afresh, to initiate.
Leader: Baptized -- part of God's one, faithful family.
People: Baptized -- acceptance because of God's love.
Leader: Baptized -- beloved.
People: Baptized -- acknowledgment by those who care about me that I am God's own dear child.
Leader: We are baptized -- freed, saved for new life in Christ.
Collect
Jesus, who opened the way for our baptism, you, first, were baptized. You, first, were the one to whom God said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." How beautiful at baptisms we witness in this place, dear God, that we hear the echo of your voice saying, "This is my child, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased." Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Gracious, Loving God, we pray that all our lives will be renewed and reaffirmed when one is baptized. This simple symbol of living water stretches far beyond what we speak with words. In the name of the Triune God. Amen.
09A Hymns
"I Know Not How" Tune: BANGOR
"Into My Heart, Lord Jesus" Response
"That King Before Whose Majesty" Tune: OLD HUNDREDTH
