Baptism Of Our Lord (Epiphany 1)
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle C
Theme: "Do Not Be Afraid, I Am With You"
Call To Worship
Leader: Praise the Lord, all you people.
People: We will praise his glory and power.
Leader: The Lord gives strength to his people.
People: And blesses them with peace.
Collect
Lord, we know that you are our God, and we are your people. We know, too, that you will be with us through all the trials and tribulations of life. Yet our hearts still fear and our troubles threaten to overwhelm us. In this time of worship, may your Spirit revive our flagging faith and grant us that peace which passes all understanding. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Sometimes, God, we seem to be so all alone. Our problems appear insurmountable, and we cannot find the wisdom or the strength to solve our difficulties on our own. Open our eyes that we may see our foolishness, and help us to put our trust in you, secure in the knowledge that you have promised to be with us always. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
Almighty God, bless these gifts, we pray, and use them and us to free others from the chains of fear that bind them because they do not trust in you. Amen.
Hymns
"Light Of The World, We Hail Thee"
"God Will Take Care Of You"
"Now Thank We All Our God"
Baptism Of Our Lord (Epiphany 1)
Second Lesson: Acts 8:14-17
Theme: Baptism Of The Holy Spirit
Call To Worship
As we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord, we are reminded that it is not the water that gives new life, but the Spirit of the Living God.
Come, let us worship together as we seek the presence of that Holy Spirit among us.
Collect
Father Almighty, as you sent your Spirit upon Jesus at his baptism and upon us when we were baptized, so we pray that your Holy Spirit will fill our lives this day as we gather to give you thanks and praise. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, there have been times when we have ignored the voice of your Spirit, and have heeded instead the cries of the world to disregard others and look out only for one's self. Forgive us, we pray, and as we renew the vows made by or for us, fill us again with your Holy Spirit. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, with grateful hearts we bring these gifts that they may be used to go to all people with the Good News of your love, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymns
"Jesus! The Name High Over All"
"Come, Holy Ghost, Our Hearts Inspire"
"This Is The Spirit's Entry Now"
Baptism Of Our Lord (Epiphany 1)
Gospel Lesson: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
Theme: The Baptism Of Jesus
Call To Worship
Baptism is the rite of passage into the family of God. We are baptized not only with water, but with the Holy Spirit. In this time of worship, let us strive to understand the full meaning of Baptism, as we mark the Baptism of Jesus.
Collect
Lord, we know that when Jesus began his ministry he was baptized with water by John the Baptist, and with the Holy Spirit as you declared he was your Son. This morning as we reflect on this event, help us to understand more fully the meaning and significance of our own baptism. Then may we go forth to carry out our own ministry empowered by the same Holy Spirit. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Forgive us, God, if we ever take lightly our baptism. On that occasion your Spirit came upon us, and when we have ignored it, we have failed you and ourselves. Keep us ever mindful of our own responsibilities as your children, and strengthen us in our resolve to keep your commandment to make disciples -- baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, you have established your church as the Body of Christ, with instructions to go into all the world to make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Accept these gifts, we pray, from your disciples gathered here who are part of that Body, and use them to further the mission of the Church. Amen.
Hymns
"When Jesus Came To Jordan"
"Walk In The Light"
"Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove"
