The Sermon:
Have you ever looked at buttons to see how interesting they are? *There are all kinds of buttons: little ones, big ones, and different colored ones. Some are plain, while some are fancy. What are buttons for, no matter what they look like? Aren't they to hold something together? If buttons are missing, your sweater or shirt looks messy or falling apart or it might even let in some cold air. Buttons need to be in place, doing their job.
Maybe people are a little like buttons. We should be in our places doing our jobs. Suppose the bus driver never showed up to take children to school, or the teacher never showed up to teach, or the cook didn't come to fix the school lunch. Or suppose the plumber never fixed leaks, the doctor never came to his or her office, or the farmers never planted their crops. Our community would start to fall a part.
Or suppose at home no one fixed a meal, did the laundry, carried out the trash, or mowed the lawn. Just as importantly, suppose at church no one would teach, play the piano, clean up a mess, fix things when they were broken, and worse yet, no one ever prayed. God's community would fall apart. Our communities, our homes, and God's family would all fall apart, if people were missing (like a missing button). People need to be in their places, doing their jobs.
What is your place? It is at home helping. It is at school learning. It is at Sunday school and church learning about Jesus. Can you think of other things?
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 3:9, "For we are God's servants, working together...."
And Colossians 3:17 says, "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus...."
We are God's servants working together in a way that pleases Jesus.
