Call to Worship (based on Psalm 100)
Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
Men: Worship God with gladness; come into God's presence with singing.
Women: Know that the Lord is God. God made us, and we are God's people, and the sheep of God's pasture.
Leader: Enter God's gates with thanksgiving and into the courts with praise. Give thanks and bless God's name.
All: For the Lord is good; God's steadfast love endures forever, and God's faithfulness to all generations.
Prayer of Confession
God, we confess to you our shortcomings and our fears. We don't know how to be faithful to you. We are so busy with our own lives that we don't notice the person in our office who needs to have someone listen to him. We don't even know when we cut someone off in our cars or cause an accident because of our self-absorption. We are so tired we can't even stay awake to hear your word in this place. Help us, God. Open our eyes and our hearts to the sorrows and joys of your world. Slow us down so that we might share in this great world by helping others. We don't want to ask, "Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and fed you?" Forgive us for our shortsightedness. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
God has given Jesus Christ the power to guide us in wisdom and forgive us our shortcomings when God raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in heaven. This is the good news! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Scripture Readings
Ephesians 1:15-23: This passage is part of a letter (epistle) sent to the church in Ephesus. This passage can be read by one person with this introduction: "Brothers and sisters in Christ, recently I have received this wonderful letter from our beloved brother, Paul. He asks that I read it to you. Today I would like to share a portion of this important letter so that you may gain strength in your faith. I begin." Then read the letter with passion and hope. The beauty and passion of the words make it a perfect reading with which to use sign language or to be interpreted through modern dance.
Matthew 25:31-46: This passage would be enhanced dramatically by having people in the congregation recite some of the verses. Use a single reader for the most part, but have six members of your congregation (pre-chosen and rehearsed) stand one at a time, and read verses 35-36. They will sit on the right side of the congregation. Also choose three voices to sit on the left side of the congregation to read verses 37b-39. These voices will stand when it is their turn and sound as if they are challenging what is being said.
Liturgist: And when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people from one another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."
Voice 1: For I was hungry and you gave me food,
Voice 2: I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
Voice 3: I was a stranger and you welcomed me.
Voice 4: I was naked and you gave me clothing
Voice 5: I was sick and you took care of me,
Voice 6: I was in prison and you visited me.
Liturgist: Then the righteous will answer him
Voice 7: Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?
Voice 8: And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing?
Voice 9: And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?
Liturgist: And the king will answer them, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." Then he will say to those at his left hand, "You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me." Then they also will answer,
Voices 7, 8, and 9: Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you? (Voices strong, but a little frightened)
Liturgist: Then he will answer them, "Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
Call to Offering
God wants all of us to inherit the kingdom prepared for us by the foundation of the world. As the ushers wait upon us for our offering, let us give freely to build up the kingdom.
Prayer of Dedication
Leader: May the gifts we have received be used to help the hungry and thirsty, the stranger and the one in need of clothing and shelter, the sick and the prisoner.
People: Jesus said, "Just as you do these things for the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me." Amen.
Benediction
Leader: With your eyes and your heart enlightened, may you know the hope to which Christ has called you, and the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints.
People: Open the eyes of our heart so that we may feel the joy and pain of the world. In this way we let Christ into our hearts. Amen.
