Christ Our Rescuer
Children's sermon
THE BIG INFLUENCE OF SMALL THINGS
Exegetical Aim: To show that Jesus Christ rescues us from sin.
Props: Swimming clothes, a diving mask, a snorkel, flippers, and a float with a ducky or other character.
Lesson: As the children are being seated, put the diving mask and snorkel on your head. You could also ask a volunteer to stand up and use him as the swimmer. Guess what I'm going to do after church today? (response) How did you guess that I was going swimming? (response) Oh! Because of these goggles and snorkel. You're absolutely correct. That's what I plan to do. But before I go, there are some other things that I must have. Hold up the swimming clothes. If you are using a volunteer, have him or her put the trunks on over his/her clothes. Why do I need these? (response) That's correct. I will need these swimming clothes in order to get in the water. Here's something else. Take your shoes off and put on the flippers. What are these used for? (response) Now stand up with everything on. Do I look as though I'm ready to go swimming? (response) Do I have everything that I need? (response)
Wait! There's one more thing that I need to take with me. What is something that you always need if you get in trouble while you are swimming? (response) That's right, you need a float. Put the float on. If the float has a character, hide the float until you use it to increase the humorous impact.
Application: What does it mean to be rescued? (response) What are some times when we need to be rescued? (response) What about being rescued from ourselves? (response) The Bible says that we get in over our head sometimes and do some pretty bad things and that's why Jesus has come to rescue us. What do you suppose that means? (response) God sent his Son Jesus to be our life float, so to speak. And all we need to do is reach out and take hold of Jesus take hold of the float and we will be rescued.
Let's Pray: Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to rescue us. Help us to believe in him. In his name, we pray. Amen.
