Christian priorities and preparedness
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Christian priorities and preparedness
Gospel Note:
Verses 32-34 complete the idea (developed from verse 13 on) that for Christians the true treasure has nothing to do with material possessions; hence the notion that one is to ''travel light'' (vv. 32-35). That idea dovetails nicely into the insistence in vv. 35-40 that the disciple is to be prepared and watchful for the unexpected coming of the ''Son of Man.'' i.e., the apocalyptic figure that will usher in God's reign in its fullness (here not clearly identified with the Christ).
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
If God Himself Be For Me
Eternal Father, Strong To Save
Guide Me, Ever, Great Redeemer
Have No Fear, Little Flock
102
Proper 14 -- Pentecost 12 -- OT 19
Lord God of creation,
You are the source and the foundation of all
that exists!
We praise you for sending Jesus into the world
to make your love perfectly clear.
The faithful testimony of the saints throughout
the ages has brought us to this moment.
We have nothing to fear for the kingdom is ours!
Renew our zeal for the Christian faith, for this is the true treasure which endures forever!
Grant us courage to follow where you have
already led the way.
Transform us from takers into givers.
Enable us to carry on the work of building your
kingdom and to always be ready for the day of
your return.
Amen.
