A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
What a night of great excitement!
(Shepherds lead a quiet life.
Barring wolf or bear incursion,
they have little thrill or strife.)
Yet, upon the night I speak of,
angel voices they had heard
telling them in wondrous phrases
that a great thing had occurred.
They were told that, as they listened,
in the town of Bethlehem,
there was born the great Messiah.
And a sign was given them.
They would find him in a manger,
Lying wrapped in swathing bands.
He was sent to save his people
by a God who understands.
Shepherds then had gone to seek him,
found the child as they were told.
He, 'The One Who was to Come,'
their eyes were priv'leged to behold.
And their ears had heard the chorus
angels sang for all their worth
praising God's eternal glory,
singing peace to men on earth.
Shepherds too, had joined the singing
as, returning to their sheep,
they had praised the God of glory.
After all, how could they sleep?
Through the ages, saints have echoed
with their lives the angel song.
It's the everlasting theme song
of the church where we belong.
