The church's mission under the Christ's direction
Gospel Note:
Chapter 21 stands in such discontinuity with the rest of John's Gospel, in content if not in style, that it is generally regarded as an anticlimactic appendix. The miracle related in verses 4-8 is reminiscent (at least) of the one in Luke 5:1-11 as part of Jesus' earthly ministry. Aside from solidifying the status of Peter and John (the ''beloved disciple''), the story placed here serves to underscore the ''fishers of men'' aspect of the church's mission and to suggest the necessity of the Christ's guidance in it.

The disciples went fishing all night ...
and caught nothing.
At daybreak, from the shore,
Jesus told them where to drop the net ...
and the net was filled!
Peter and Thomas,
Nathanael and the others received guidance even
when they did not ask for it.
And when they received it,
they acted upon it.
Lord, cause us to be open to your guidance
whenever and however it comes to us.
Give us grateful hearts when we recognize your
guidance embedded within unexpected situations.
Train us to anticipate your presence in every
situation of life and to act upon your guidance
when we receive it.
In the name of Jesus Christ we pray.
Amen.
