Object:
A remote control from a television set.
Purpose: To stress the importance of learning to listen and to be receptive to what others say.
Material: A remote control from a television set.
Lesson: This morning I have an interesting little gadget that I think some of you have probably seen or used. Do you know what this is? ... It is called a remote control. And do you know what it is used for? ... With a remote control, you can make things happen by just pushing a button.
So, let's see what happens when I push the ''on'' button. Nothing happened. Why? ... Because there has to be something around that can be turned on or off by this remote control. I can push this button and it will send out a signal, but nothing happens because there is no television set here to receive that signal.
The lesson of this is simple. What is sent must be received, or nothing will happen. And the lesson applies to many things. God sent his love to us in Jesus, but if we do not receive it, nothing happens. Your parents send you a message of what they want you to do, but if you do not accept what they say, or if you fail to remember what they said, nothing will happen in the way your parents want it to happen. If your friend does not really listen to you when you talk, nothing will change because of what you said.
So we all need to listen when people speak to us, and we want others to listen to us when we speak. This is an essential part of learning to get along with other people. It is also an important lesson for your parents as well as for you.
