The cosmic coming of the Son of man
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
This passage, near the conclusion of the so-called "little
apocalypse" in Mark 13, is extremely problematic on a number of
grounds. For one thing, Jesus appears to be referring to someone
other than himself when he talks about the Son of man in the
third person. For another, his definite (and apparently mistaken)
declaration about the timing in verse 30 seems to contradict the
equivocation in verse 32 (which is probably a later tradition).
What is clear is the cosmic scope of the events inaugurating the
Kingdom of God and the necessity of being vigilant.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
As Saints Of Old
I Know That My Redeemer Lives!
Forth In Thy Name, O Lord, I Go
Lord, Our God, With Praise We Come
Take My Life, That I May Be
Proper 28 ù Pentecost 26 ù OT 33
Lord, when will the end be?
How will we know that the end is near?
Can you give us a hint?
Will you help us to read the signs?
These are some of the questions we have, Lord,
but we know that the details of salvation must
be left up to you.
Forgive us for testing your plan with questions
when we should be trusting you in all things.
We need to remember that the signs of your
kingdom are all around us.
Signs of the kingdom are especially present
during the times when we are being tested.
In these moments, increase our trust in your
promises, and fortify us with your Holy Spirit.
Amen.
