That Seeing, They May Believe
52 Children's Object Lessons
Object:
A Bible with a black cover.
Purpose: To stress the importance of Bible reading.
Lesson: Have you ever noticed that many Bibles have a black
cover? I wonder why? It could be so that the dust of the room
will not soil the cover since many people have the Bible set out
on a table. I do not know the real reason behind the traditional
black cover; but if you think about it for a moment, there is a
good symbolic reason.
We say that the Bible contains the Word of God and that God's
Word is a light unto our path. But the light cannot shine into
our lives when the Bible remains closed. Therefore, a closed
Bible, with its black cover, symbolizes spiritual darkness.
When we open the Bible, the pages appear to be very white, in
contrast to the black cover. As we read God's Word in the
scriptures, his light shines forth from the pages into our lives.
A closed Bible is darkness; an open Bible means light for life.
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
* When a child becomes indifferent to family devotions.
* When looking at the family Bible.
* To illustrate the importance of any kind of reading. The
thoughts (light) from its pages cannot enter into our thinking
until we open the book.
