A different sort of greatness
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
This particular passage is apparently directed toward certain false Christologies that turned Jesus into a docetic divine messenger and granted his followers an exalted status. Contrary to that view, Mark asserts not only that suffering and death were the destiny of Jesus, but also that discipleship is not a matter of the greatness of priority and prestige; that true "greatness" resides in the humble assumption of such despised roles asservant and child.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
All Depends On Our Possessing
A Lamb Goes Uncomplaining Forth
Where Charity And Love Prevail
Christ Is Alive! Let Christians Sing
O God Of Every Nation
Children Of The Heavenly Father
Lord God,
your plan for the salvation of the world
involved
humility,
suffering
and self-sacrifice.
Jesus willingly chose to follow your plan,
giving his life in our place.
This unselfish act represents a debt which we
cannot possibly repay.
We present ourselves to you as living sacrifices.
As the potter takes a lump of clay, molding and
shaping it into a useful vessel,
we now invite you to mold us and
to shape us into useful vessels.
Bring out the very best gifts which you have
placed within us and motivate us to use
those gifts in humble service.
Take that which is worthless in our lives and
transform it into something precious.
All the glory belongs to you, gracious Lord.
Amen.
