A discipleship of crosses, not of conquests
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
In this account of Jesus' response to Peter's confession of
him as the Messiah, it is clear that Jesus is contradicting in no
uncertain terms the triumphal expectations that Peter invested in
that title. Jesus points out not only that he himself must
suffer, but that his true disciples will have to take up their
own crosses and lose their own lives.
Liturgical Color:
Purple
Suggested Hymns:
"Take up Your Cross," The Savior Said
Jesus, Refuge Of The Weary
How Blessed Is This Place, O Lord
Only-Begotten, Word Of God Eternal
O God Of Jacob
One There Is Above All Others
Lent 2
Deny yourself!
Take up your cross!
Follow me!
These words are hard for us, Lord.
Perhaps these words are hard for us because they
call forth a deep commitment from us.
How far should our commitment go?
We hear your words about saving life
and losing life and our understanding of these
words is turned upside-down.
We are afraid of suffering.
Take our weak faith and make it stronger than
anything else in our lives.
By your grace, transform our understanding of
suffering into something which builds endurance,
character, and hope.
As Jesus put his life on the line for us,
grant us the courage to live our lives for him.
Amen.
