Do The Dishes?

Matthew To Revelation
Object: dirty dishes
Good morning, boys and girls. I want to talk to you about a very popular subject: doing the dishes. How many of you like to do the dishes? (let them answer) Not one of you likes to do the dishes? That's hard to believe. Isn't there one of you that would like to do the dishes? Think about sticking your hands down in the hot, greasy water. Don't you like to scrape the plates and fill up the garbage bags? Or what about the way you get to wipe each knife, fork, and spoon with your damp towel? Doesn't that sound like fun? And don't forget the fun of working together with your brother or sister and how much they enjoy working with you. All of that fun, and not one of you likes doing the dishes! That's hard to believe. But it's so and I know it.
Washing dishes is like suffering. All boys and girls suffer a lot when it comes time to do the dishes. The worst part is that they have to be done every day. Doing the dishes is suffering; it is filled with pain, and I don't know anyone who thinks it is fun. But it has to be done. You would not want to eat off of dirty plates, and you cannot afford to eat in a restaurant every meal. Even paper plates for every meal is expensive, and you must still do the pots and pans.
Washing dishes is suffering. But there is one thing that almost makes it worth it. How many times have you felt good when you have heard your mom and dad tell you how much they appreciate it when you help? That is a good feeling, isn't it? (let them answer) Sure it is. You are glad that there is something that you can do to help. When a parent praises you for your work, you feel good.
Christians find that loving and serving Christ can also mean sharing some of the problems that Jesus has in the world. Not everyone loves Jesus - and some people even hate him. The people who do wrong against Jesus often also do wrong to you. They hate you, hurt you, and tell lies about you because you love Jesus. That isn't any fun. You may even wonder sometimes if you want to be a Christian.
But Jesus tells us that when we share in his suffering, then we also will share in the praise and the glory. That means that there will be a time when Jesus will share with us all of the wonderful things that can only happen to God.
You may not like to do the dishes, and you may not always want to be a Christian, but stay with it because just like your parents share their love and praise with you, so will God share his love with you. It isn't always fun or easy to be a Christian, but it's worth it.
