Don't Ignore The Signs
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: some signs, such as "Stop," "Keep Off The Grass," or "Beware Of Dog"
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you know what the word ignore means? It is a very good word, but I wonder how many of you know what it means? (let them answer) Very good, it means that you are not paying attention to someone or something. I have a friend who does not pay attention to signs. He ignores them. When he rides his bike in the street, he ignores this sign. (hold up "Stop" sign) Do you know what happens? (let them answer) That's right; he wrecks his bike. Sometimes he goes through a stranger's yard and he ignores these signs. (hold up "Keep Off The Grass" and "Beware Of Dog" signs) Now, what do you think happens? The owner yells at him and the dog bites him! It doesn't pay to ignore signs.
Some people ignore God, which is sometimes called "mocking" God. They know that he is around and is very important to other people, but they forget that God is important for them also. When you forget God, it costs you. The Bible teaches us that we have just the kind of lives in the future that we plan for right now. If you forget all about God and his life and forgiveness, then you will be missing God's love and forgiveness. God has certain rules such as the Ten Commandments, and you must keep those rules and never ignore them. If you do ignore them, then you will have the punishment that God says goes with ignoring the rules.
The Bible teaches us that we should not ignore or mock God. That makes sense just as the signs make sense. The stop sign is there for our protection. If you stop, then no one gets hurt and everyone is happy. If you don't stop, or just ignore the sign, then someone may get hurt.
Listening to God and paying attention makes happy people. When you are paying attention you are finding new ways to love and share with other people. It is is a good thing to remember, for everyone who wants to be happy. Never ignore God and the teachings of God, and you will know love and happiness.
