Object:
If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
-- John 14:15
It is as simple and as difficult as that. Jesus was preparing his disciples for his departure. He promised them that they would not be left alone with this task but that he would send another advocate to be with them forever. There is a spirit of truth that transcends all of our philosophical arguments and bids us love one another as Jesus had commanded (13:34-35). This very direct statement stands over all the divisions within the Christian community and calls us to task. The truth of our failure to obey this direct commandment of our Lord stands as a continuing indictment of the church. The proliferation of divisions within the church continues to shame the body of Christ. In John 13:35 Jesus said, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
The evidence for why many in this world question the validity of our faith is all too apparent. Jesus promised to send the spirit of truth to be an advocate for the living out of the faith. "This is the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him." The difficult question for the church is whether we too have become too worldly to receive the spirit of truth. Perhaps a beginning point for every church is to ask themselves daily, "What have we done today that has demonstrated our love for other Christians within our church, among our churches, among our denominations, and for the world?" Perhaps if we focused on that question, we would see Christ more clearly among us. "They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."
