Summary
Sam and Nancy are in love. Both are Christians but haven't told the other. The elevator on which they are riding gets stuck and may crash. Here is an opportunity to tell the other but they miss it.
Playing Time: 7 minutes
Setting: An elevator in a high rise
Props: None
Costumes: Contemporary, casual
Time: The present
Cast: GEORGE
SAM -- his friend
WOMAN -- passenger
NANCY -- Sam's girl
DARLENE -- Nancy's friend
GEORGE: (ENTERS ALONG WITH SAM, TALKING AS THEY RUN FOR THE ELEVATOR) Hurry, let's catch this elevator.
SAM: C'mon, I'll hold it.
GEORGE: (IN THE ELEVATOR) Well, you have to tell her, you know.
SAM: Yes, I guess I do. But, how?
GEORGE: Boy, is this elevator slow. How? I don't know. Maybe the four spiritual laws or something.
SAM: That's great for street evangelism -- strangers -- but this is a girl I'm dating, not some stranger. How would it look, we're at the movie, I gently slip my arm around her, draw her closely to me and whisper, "Do you know God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life?"
GEORGE: This is not just a girl you're dating. You're serious about her. You said so yourself.
SAM: Well, yes, I am serious about her.
GEORGE: All the more reason to talk to her about the Lord. If you're thinking about marriage ...
SAM: Who said I was thinking about marriage?
GEORGE: You said you were serious.
SAM: Well, yes, I am serious about her. (A WOMAN GETS ON THE ELEVATOR AND NO ONE SPEAKS FOR A WHILE)
WOMAN: This elevator is sure running slow. (SHE EXITS)
GEORGE: Well?
SAM: Well, what?
GEORGE: What about Nancy?
SAM: I said I was serious about her.
GEORGE: Well, if you're serious doesn't that mean marriage?
SAM: Not in my case it doesn't.
GEORGE: Well, then, what are you serious about? Anyway, wouldn't it be the thing to do to tell her about Jesus?
SAM: I don't know. That's tough to do.
GEORGE: How long have you dated Nancy?
SAM: A year. Why?
GEORGE: I don't know. It just seems right for you to tell her, somehow. Why not just start off by telling how you have this great friend -- Jesus. Ease into it that way. Share your joy of the Lord. You'll have a better relationship.
SAM: I don't know. It's tough.
GEORGE: Well, this is my floor. Good luck. (NANCY ENTERS ELEVATOR) Oh, hi, Nancy. See ya later. (GEORGE EXITS)
SAM: Hi.
NANCY: Hi. (THEY HUG. PAUSE) I missed you.
SAM: Yeah, me, too.
NANCY: Nice day?
SAM: Yeah. You?
NANCY: Not bad. What are we doing tonight?
SAM: I don't know.
NANCY: What's wrong with this thing?
SAM: I don't know. It's been slow.
NANCY: I'll say it's slow.
SAM: I don't know. What's on TV?
NANCY: Nothing, probably. I thought we could catch a movie or something.
SAM: (SNEAKING A LOOK IN HIS WALLET) I don't feel much like a movie.
NANCY: Well, what then?
SAM: I don't know.
NANCY: I don't feel like cooking tonight. Could we go out?
SAM: Yeah, I guess. (THE ELEVATOR JOLTS TO A STOP)
NANCY: I think this thing is stuck.
SAM: Yeah, does look like it, doesn't it.
NANCY: Oh, great.
SAM: I'll ring the alarm button.
NANCY: What'll that do?
SAM: I don't know. Maybe someone will hear it.
NANCY: And ...?
SAM: And fix it, I guess.
NANCY: Well, that's kinda scary, right?
SAM: Well, it's not so bad. We're alone.
NANCY: And trapped ... in an elevator ... twenty-seven floors above the ground ... the very hard ground.
SAM: Don't worry. These things won't crash or anything.
NANCY: (GETTING A BIT SCARED) Are you sure?
SAM: Sure, I'm sure. That's just in the movies ... and then Charlton Heston comes to rescue us ...
NANCY: But they always die in those movies.
SAM: That's just the point. It's just the movies. It's just make-believe.
NANCY: We couldn't die?
SAM: Not really. They'll get it fixed in a few minutes.
NANCY: I hope so. I'll admit it, I'm scared. (ELEVATOR LURCHES) Sam, I am scared, now. Definitely scared.
SAM: (SHOWING NO COMFORT TO NANCY) It's all right. I'll see what I can do. (HE FIDDLES WITH THE DOORS) Must be something electrical.
NANCY: Yeah, but people die all the time.
SAM: Not in elevators.
NANCY: Don't mention elevators.
SAM: It's all right, Nancy. It's all right. (SHE BEGINS TO CRY A LITTLE AT FIRST AND THEN MORE AND MORE)
NANCY: I'm a little scared. I'm sorry. Please, can't you do something? Do something, please! Sam, do something!
SAM: It's all right. Calm down, Nancy. We'll be all right.
NANCY: No, we won't. They don't know we're here. They don't care. No one cares.
SAM: Calm down. For heaven's sake, calm down.
NANCY: No one cares. Sam, no one cares. I can't stand it. I can't stand it any more!
SAM: Will you shut up! You're getting me upset!
NANCY: (REALLY CRYING NOW) You don't even care. No one cares. No one.
SAM: Shut up! Shut up! (THEY SIT IN SILENCE APART)
NANCY: It moved.
SAM: Yeah.
NANCY: It's working again.
SAM: Yeah. It is. (PAUSE) Well, here we are. (THEY STRAIGHTEN THEIR CLOTHES AND FIX THEIR HAIR. DOORS OPEN)
NANCY: (EXITS ELEVATOR) Oh, there's Darlene.
SAM: I'm going to the restroom. I'll be right back.
NANCY: Okay.
DARLENE: Hi, Nancy, were you trapped up there?
NANCY: Yeah. Yeah, we were.
DARLENE: We saw the repairmen working -- and the firemen were called, just in case.
NANCY: Yeah, well, we're all right.
DARLENE: Did you get a chance to talk to Sam, yet?
NANCY: No. It's not so easy.
DARLENE: Just share your love of the Lord with him. Tell him how Jesus has moved in your heart.
