Epiphany 6
Poems
A GOSPEL TREASURY
Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
A leper came to Jesus,
a living man, yet dead.
He asked the Lord to cleanse him.
'If you will, you can,' he said.
And Jesus said, 'I will it.'
and drove him not away.
Then, touching the untouchable,
he stopped the dread decay.
'See to it,' Jesus told him,
'You tell no man at all.
But go and show the priest
that you have no mark or gall.
so he can certify you
that leprosy is gone.
Then make the gift that Moses claimed,
and lo, it all is done.'
The leper left, rejoicing
and telling of his cure.
For how could he keep quiet
now that his skin was pure?
He had to tell the story,
how Jesus made him sound.
He could not cease the telling,
but spread the news around.
Now I can just imagine
the joy he must have known
as once again he entered
the place that was his own.
Again with friends and family,
no longer they would mourn.
For he, once dead, was living
as though he’d been reborn.
Lord, if I ever wonder
how far your hand can reach,
remind me of that leper
and all that he could teach.
For, touching the untouchable,
you cured and made him whole
and showed how far you’d stretch your hand
to save a human soul.
a living man, yet dead.
He asked the Lord to cleanse him.
'If you will, you can,' he said.
And Jesus said, 'I will it.'
and drove him not away.
Then, touching the untouchable,
he stopped the dread decay.
'See to it,' Jesus told him,
'You tell no man at all.
