A Father's Desire
Children's sermon
Children's Sermons A To Z
Exegetical Aim: To communicate our Father's desire to gather and save his children.
Props: One of the newborn infants of the congregation or a baby doll.
Lesson: Hold the baby in your arms. What do I have in my arms? (response) Yes, and babies are very special. Can you tell me something that a baby needs? (response) The children may need a little prompting here. When a baby cries, what does the baby need? (response) And what else do they need when they cry? (response) Yes, they need food, and sometimes they need their diapers to be changed. When they are cold, what do they need? (response) When they are tired, what do they need to do? (response) When they are lonely, what do they need? (response) They need to be held and rocked. When they are dirty? (bath) When they are full of gas? (burped) Can you tell me anything else that a baby needs? (response)
Did your mom and dad do all these things for you? (response) Tell me some things they did for you? (response) Did they feed you? (response) How many times did they feed you? (response) Did they rock you and hold you? (response) How many times did they hug you and hold you? (response) Did they burp you, change your diaper, keep you warm, put you down for naps? (response) Why do you think your parents did all these things for you? (response)
That's right! When you were a baby, your parents wanted nothing else in all the world than for you to grow up to be big and strong like you are now. They loved you so much they did all these things for you. Not just once but over and over because you were their baby. Your mom and dad still feel that way about you.
Application: There is someone else who feels that way about you. Someone who wants to gather you in his arms and hold you and tell you how much he cares. Do you know who that is? (response) Your Father in heaven. Did you know that? That your Father in heaven loves you so much?
As long as you live, remember that! Whether you're a baby, a little girl or a little boy, a mom or a dad, a grandma or a grandpa, your heavenly Father wants to hold you and gather you all together and take care of you.
Let's Pray: Father, we thank you that you love us. We know you care for us, and, Father, we love you too. Amen.

Imitating Goodness
Exegetical Aim: To teach that imitating what good people do is helpful.
Props: None needed.
Lesson: Good morning. Today I have a game for us to play. It's called the "Imitation Game." Would you like to play? (response) Okay, good! This is how you play. I will do something and then you imitate me. Ready? Here goes. At this point do any simple movements such as touching your face or raising your hand, and let the children follow you. You are really good imitators. Let me ask you a question, though. What if I were to burp really loudly right here during church? Would you still imitate me? (you hope they will say no) Why wouldn't you? (response) Right, because it's not a nice thing to do. But what if I were to shake hands with someone, shake hands with one child, would you imitate that? (response) Okay, ahead! Let the children imitate the shaking of hands.
Application: In the Bible, Saint Paul was a good man. And he told some early Christians this, "Join in imitating me." Why do you suppose he wanted the people to imitate him? (response) Yes, because he was good and he loved Jesus very much. Things that he did were worthy of imitating. If we imitate someone who is good, we do good things. If we imitate someone who is bad, we do bad things. Do you know who the Apostle Paul tried to imitate? (Jesus) Yes, he saw Jesus as his role model. Today I want you to think of ways to imitate Jesus. When you are about to eat, imitate Jesus. When you see someone feeling bad, imitate Jesus. When you are having a good time, imitate Jesus. When someone gives something to you as a gift, imitate Jesus. When someone asks you to share your toys, imitate Jesus. And after a while you will begin to be more like Jesus. And that will make God happy.
Let's Pray: Dear God, help us to imitate Jesus in everything we do, so that our lives may make you happy. Amen.
