First Sunday In Lent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7
Theme: Open Your Eyes
Call To Worship
Leader: Open your eyes.
People: Adam and Eve succumbed to temptation. They were human.
Leader: Open your eyes.
People: Jesus withstood temptation. His purpose stretched beyond himself.
Leader: Open your eyes. Be aware of your human nature. Attend to your spiritual nature. Come, let us worship God.
People: We have come to worship God.
Collect
We stand here in the middle of the garden, O God, aware of the chasm between who we are and the person we would be. While it still whispers, teach us to listen to the inner sense of right. When we discover we are naked, let us not run away but sew fig leaves and move beyond innocence toward integrity. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
As we discover anew that we are vulnerable, human, imperfect beings, guide our growth, O God. As we notice the subtle ways we yield to temptations, draw us away from self-loathing. As we find a little space in our lives for you, restore our conviction that you stand with us through all things. Amen.
20A Hymns1
"[God Reigns O'er All The Earth][This Is My Father's World]" Tune: TERRA BEATA
"Open My Eyes, That I May See" Tune: OPEN MY EYES
"[Blessed][Blest] Be The Tie That Binds" Tune: BOYLSTON or DENNIS
First Sunday In Lent
Second Lesson: Romans 5:12-19
Theme: All The Difference
Call To Worship
Adam and Eve pulled us into reality. Adam and Eve pointed to endings but not the end of us. Jesus leads us through the real world. Jesus directs us to new beginnings.
Collect
Though sin and wrong choices are as real today as they became in earliest time, the Son of God has made all the difference. We shall overcome our mistakes because of his compassion and grace. God will see us through. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You gave your life, precious Jesus, so we might live finer lives. We will try to do better because of your free gift of forgiveness. We will try to remember beyond Easter. For your sake. Amen.
20A Hymns1
"There Is A Green Hill Far Away" Tune: MEDITATION
"It's Me, It's Me, O Lord" Tune: PENITENT
"We Shall Overcome" Tune: WE SHALL OVERCOME
First Sunday In Lent
Gospel: Matthew 4:1-11
Theme: Famished
Call To Worship
We are hungry sojourners on a Lenten journey, pilgrims on a holy trip. Hear God's invitation to make the most of the journey.
Collect
During this Lenten time of reflection, O God, we would work to overcome the temptation to live only for ourselves. Make us increasingly aware of the others who also sojourn in this temporary world. As did Jesus, we can carry one another's load. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
One thing leads to another, O God, when it comes to temptation. You know our weaknesses, from chocolate to greed, from personal advantage to the urge to cocoon, from compassion exhaustion to just not caring. Come into the midst of our temptations with a nod toward those who suffer. Motion us toward the kind word and the loving act. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
20A Hymns1
"Forty Days And Forty Nights" Tune: HEINLEIN
"We Are Pilgrims On A Holy Trip" Tune: COMPASSION
"Take Time to Be Holy" Tune: HOLINESS or LONGSTAFF
____________
1. During Lent, try verse one of "[Behold Us, Lord][O Grant Us, God], A Little Space" (Tune: WINCHESTER OLD) as a response after the confession or before the pastoral prayer.
