Call To Worship
Leader: With the birth of Jesus, God has become a parent. Raise shouts of praise.
People: We acknowledge you, O God, as the source of our being.
We raise shouts of praise and alleluias to your holy name.
Collect
No matter if the firstborn is a birth child, an adopted child, or a loaned neighborhood child, the anticipation of a wanted child coming into the household brings joy. We look at you through different eyes now, holy Parent. We see the joy and fulfillment of your heart. You are parent, not landlord. Because of Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Teach us more fully, O God, what it means to be related. Teach us how to bridge distances across the dinner table, as we pass through the house, as we leave hurried notes. Teach us so we will constantly renew the message that family members are of the heart begotten. Amen.
07B Hymns
"Of The [Father's Love][Parent's Heart] Begotten" Tune: DIVINUM MYSTERIUM
"That Boy-Child Of Mary" Tune: BLANTYRE
"While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night" Tune: WINCHESTER OLD
Second Sunday After Christmas
Second Lesson: Ephesians 1:3-14
Theme: Love Lavished On You
Call To Worship
God's parenting contains nothing miserly. Love is lavished on God's children, not parsimoniously dispensed to dependent underlings. A good solid start -- is that not what good parenting is about? Come, receive God's love in all its abundance. Accept God's love in all your fullness.
Collect
Blessings go to you, O God, who has blessed us in Jesus with every spiritual blessing. Blessings go to you who chooses to give us Jesus. You save us with your forgiveness. You open us with your kindness. Blessings to you, O giving and merciful God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We find it easier, O God, to love people in theory than to practice loving. We find it less complicated to respect others and to be kind from a distance than when we see them every day. Dear God, let the strength of your love encourage us to decide to greet those close to us with a loving spirit. For the sake of Jesus. Amen.
07B Hymns
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" Tune: BEECHER
"Love Came Down At Christmas" Tune: GARTAN or WHITNEY
"O Love Of God, How Strong And True" Tune: EISENACH
Second Sunday After Christmas
Gospel: John 1:1-18
Theme: God's Kids
Call To Worship
Leader: No one has ever seen God.
People: The mystery of Christmas brings us closer to God.
Leader: It is God's only Son,
People: God as clearly human as a little child.
Leader: Jesus is close to the Father's heart,
People: So close are spirit and flesh.
Leader: Jesus has made God known.
People: Jesus born at Christmas brings God to us.
All: Let us worship God with an alleluia.
Collect
As we receive Jesus, O God, you give us the power to become children of God. As we believe in the name of Jesus, you give us the power to become your children. All praise to you, Mary's child born in the night, O word made flesh among us. Through Jesus. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We do not know you, gracious God, when our idea of you is too small. We do not recognize you when our concept of you puts you completely beyond our reach. Hear both our wanting to be yours and our reluctance to accept the responsibility of being yours. Amen.
07B Hymns
"Born In the Night, Mary's Child" Tune: MARY'S CHILD
"O Word Made Flesh Among Us" Tune: BRED DINA VIDA VINGAR
"What Child Is This?" Tune: GREENSLEEVES
