Matthew To Revelation
Object: an Alka--Seltzer tablet and a glass of water
Good morning, boys and girls. Did you know that sometimes God is like medicine? I would like to show you how I mean this. I wonder if you have ever felt like telling someone about Jesus, but you just could not get the words out of your mouth. I know what you think because it has happened to me. You want to say something but you are afraid of what others will think about you.
That has happened to a lot of people and it must have happened to Paul, because he wrote one of his best friends about it and told him what to do when this happened. He said a lot of people have this problem, and they need to stir themselves up. There is the Spirit of God in us telling us what we should do, but God's Spirit and our spirit don't seem to mix. We need to not be ashamed, Paul says, or as one translation puts it, "stir up this inner power," so that we can act.
This is where I believe God is like a medicine. Let's pretend that this is my spirit. (hold up glass of water) It is a spirit that looks like all other spirits. It just lies there. It doesn't do anything but sit. I want to show you what happens when I mix God's Spirit up with mine. Pretend that this is God's Spirit. (hold up the Alka--Seltzer) When I mix God's Spirit with my spirit, and stir them up together, I get some real action. (stir the two together) That glass of water has come alive, and you know if you drink something like this when you need it you are going to get action.
That is the way it should be when we want to tell our friends the right way to live. We know what we should say, but we don't say it. Take courage and read and think about the teachings of God, and a little bit of this will go a long way. You will be a new person. You will have great courage and you will be able to stand up for what you believe is right.
Paul knew what it was like and he told his friend Timothy. I am sure that Timothy used it because he was one of God's early heroes. I hope the next time you want to do the right thing, or say the right thing to a friend and you don't feel that you have the courage, you will remember when God is like a medicine. Then remember what he says and get stirred up. It will work. I promise you.
