Fourth Sunday Of Advent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VI, Cycle A
Object:
Theme: Immanuel
Call To Worship
It is an awesome thing to stand in the presence of God, to stand with feet on holy ground, to lift our hearts and voices in worship, to open our bodies and minds to divine healing, and to receive in our souls the truth of the ages. Come, let us worship together!
Invocation
O God, our Father, who has brought us again to the glad season when we commemorate the birth of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; grant that his Spirit may be born anew in our hearts this day and that we may joyfully welcome him to reign over us. Thus may we claim your promise of Immanuel -- God with us. Amen.
Confession
Eternal God, we confess that in spite of all appearances to the contrary, we are unprepared for your coming. We have been carefully choosing gifts and wrapping them, planning our holiday trips, and preparing for the arrival of guests. Yet we have left the preparations for your arrival to chance. Help us now, even at this late hour, to open our minds and hearts to your Word that we may receive it afresh. So help us to be ready at your coming to welcome you with open hearts and expectant lives. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Offertory Prayer
O God, you have given us the greatest gift of all in your Son, Jesus Christ. We can say, "Thank you, Lord," with our mouths, and it is right for us to do so. Yet we realize that those words can be said so easily that they may be meaningless. Therefore, we now give that phrase new emphasis by saying, "Thank you, Lord," with our gifts. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus"
"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"
"Angels We Have Heard On High"
