Fourth Sunday In Advent
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle A
First Lesson: Isaiah 7:10-16
Theme: A Sign
Call To Worship
Leader: Do you suppose that God's infant coming is to remind us that our beginning as Christians is like that of children who at first do not know how to refuse the evil and choose the good?
People: Do you suppose God is telling us that we need growing time with guidance and nurture rather than expecting immediately to be mature in our faith?
Collect
So great is your love for us, O Thou who sees beyond what we know and reaches beyond our understanding. You prepare us for your coming by sending the angels' songs and the shepherds' rejoicing to announce amid all the bleakness that this, indeed, is something good. Therefore, we rejoice. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
We, who need signs from you, O God, so that we might stand firm in our faith, wait anew for the birth. We come each Advent as new persons, changed by the events of the past year and ever-needy of signs to renew our faith. Amen.
04A Hymns
"It Came Upon The Midnight Clear" Tune: CAROL
"[O][Oh] Come, O Come, Emmanuel" Tune: VENI EMMANUEL
"Angels We Have Heard On High" Tune: GLORIA
Fourth Sunday In Advent
Second Lesson: Romans 1:1-7
Theme: Grace And Peace
Call To Worship
By addressing Gentiles and Romans, the apostle Paul stretches the realm of Christianity. If we allow him also to greet us, then we, too, will hear the call to announce the good news by the way we live and by the things we do in our communities. So I say his words to you today: Grace to you and peace from God our Parent and Jesus Christ our Savior.
Collect
Christians not only choose to belong to Jesus Christ, we are called by you, O God, to belong to him. In these days of celebrating the birth of God on earth, bring us to a fuller understanding of what it means to belong to Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Because we are yours, O God, your first concern is to convey grace and peace to us. How often we greet others -- perhaps our only meeting -- with a careless "How are you?" that says nothing. Remind us in this holy season to bring God's peace and grace when greeting others -- because we are yours. Amen.
04A Hymns
"[O][Oh] Come, All Ye Faithful" Tune: ADESTE FIDELES
"Away In a Manger" Tune: AWAY IN A MANGER
"Joy To The World" Tune: ANTIOCH
Fourth Sunday In Advent
Gospel: Matthew 1:18-25
Theme: Look For Signs
Call To Worship
Leader: Lay aside fear, pick up your courage.
People: God is coming soon.
Leader: Stop your hesitating, start believing.
People: God is coming soon.
All: We look for signs of God-with-us, Emmanuel. We have come to put on faith. God is coming soon.
Collect
We come as your people, dear God, with the quiet faith of expectation. We come as earthly citizens filled with imperfections and with being less than we know we can be. We come, nevertheless, because you have loved us so dearly that you are coming to us. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
When something seems beyond our comprehension, O God, we fear that we are in the wrong. We think only of the consequences of misunderstanding. When our plans are disrupted, we know temporary turmoil. Fear, uncertainty, and feelings of weakness threaten. Forgive our doubting. Forgive our forgetting that you are with us through all things. Amen.
04A Hymns
"[O][Oh] Come, All Ye Faithful" Tune: ADESTE FIDELES
"Gentle Joseph, Joseph Dear" Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN
"O Little Town Of Bethlehem" Tune: ST. LOUIS
