The glory, majesty, and power of God

LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Holy is our God who created heaven and earth. His glory fills the universe!
People:
He is awesome in glory, majesty, and power; and is worthy of our devotion.
Pastor:
We stand in awe of him, because he alone is God. There is none like him.
People:
We worship God, who though he became flesh like us, is beyond the reach of our greatest potential.
Collect
Almighty God, your power is beyond our comprehension; your majesty overwhelms our imagination; and your glory exceeds our understanding! Nevertheless, we bow in awe before you believing you have claimed us as your children whom you love, and for whom you sent your Son to rescue from sin. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We do not challenge your greatness, O God. But often we deny it by acting more like buddies than servants. Forgive us when we ignore the majesty of your divine nature. Grant us submissive hearts to your authority, that we may find redemption in the security of your power, and discover our reason for being. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Before Jehovah's Awful Throne"
"Holy, Holy, Holy!"
"O Worship the King"
"The Lord Jehovah Reigns"
PROPER 18
Sunday between September 4 and 10 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 13:1-10
Theme:
Let love be sincere
Call to Worship
Pastor:
God's love is genuine and self-giving. He expects our love for one another to be just as real.
People:
We are brothers and sisters in Christ, and need to share our faith and love with each other.
Pastor:
Our love should also be just as real for those who abuse us; for they too, are God's children.
People:
May our lives become instruments of God whereby he can bring peace and joy to our world.
Collect
Eternal God, our heavenly Father, who loves us even when we are unlovable: Grant us the desire and ability to love one another with sincerity, that the example of your children may usher in the day of peace and brotherhood. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Dear Father, we know our high calling is to love; and we do profess our love. Yet within our hearts is the same spirit that produces hate and hurt. Forgive us for love which flows from our tongue, but not from our hearts. Wash out the carnal nature of our hearts which makes us warriors instead of peacemakers; that we may be persons who love, rather than lie. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"All Praise to Our Redeeming Lord"
"Blest Be the Dear Uniting Love"
"Jesus, United by Thy Grace"
"O Brother Man, Fold to Thy Heart"
PROPER 18
Sunday between September 4 and 10 inclusive
Gospel:
Matthew 18:15-20
Theme:
The church's responsibility to sinners
Call to Worship
Pastor:
We are persons with human nature. And therefore we sin against each other from time to time.
People:
It is difficult to relate to persons when they offend or abuse us.
Pastor:
But our Christian duty is to go to them in love, showing how they have hurt us.
People:
May God help us to be that honest with one another, giving strength to our Christian fellowship.
Collect
Father in heaven, who directs your church to be a corrective enabler, when we sin against one another: Give us compassion and genuine love toward those who hurt us; that we may enable them to understand their errors and correct them. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We are human, Father, and therefore, we hurt when Christian friends offend us. And in our hurt, we become angry toward them, instead of concerned for them. Forgive us when we have not come face to face with them in the conflict, with a desire to restore wholeness in the church. Help us to love one another enough to be honest with each other when sin tries to ruin our fellowship. Grant us your Spirit, both to sinners and to those who are sinned against. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
Hymns
"Jesus, We Look to Thee"
"Jesus, with Thy Church Abide"
"O Brother Man, Fold to Thy Heart"
"When We Walk with the Lord"
