God's incarnate Light

Series II
Exegetical note: Since the Second Coming of Jesus is a central concern of this very late pseudonymous epistle, that is almost certainly the meaning of the coming (parousia) of Jesus mentioned in v. 16. The account of the transfiguration of Jesus here is intended to affirm the historicity of the gospel as well as to confirm the authority of the writer, as a witness to that the first Christophany, to make pronouncements about the second. The light imagery ("lamp," "star," "dawn") that he uses in the process is typical of biblical theophanies, but nonetheless moving.

Leader:
We meet in the name of the Light of the world!
People:
WE MEET IN THE NAME OF THE INCARNATE CHRIST!
Leader:
May the power of God's presence be with us!
People:
MAY THE LIGHT OF GOD'S GLORY BE UPON US!
Collect
Most brilliant God, you have called us to let our lights shine on behalf of you, your Christ, and your coming Reign. Set our souls aglow with your Spirit: that, thus illumined from within, we may radiate the perfect love of the one true Light, in whose name we pray. Amen
Prayer of Confession
Merciful God, we humbly confess that, rather than being instruments of your divine Light that drive out spiritual darkness, we often live as though victims of that darkness whose souls are, at best, dim candles. Forgive us our failure to reflect the brightness of your love and mercy, O God, and make us radiant lamps for your coming Reign until its bright day at last dawns in all its glory. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
Last Sunday after the Epiphany
(The Transfiguration of Our Lord)
Gospel:
Matthew 17:1-9
Theme:
The One who radiates God
Exegetical note: The idea of God's presence being signified by a cloud (albeit a bright one!) has much Old Testament precedent (e.g., Exodus 24:15-18), and here provides a marvelous contrast with the sun-like radiance of Jesus. It is noteworthy that the disciples here cannot bear either the sight or the sound of the awesome "enclouded" God (v. 6) but the God whom Jesus radiates (versus reflects) they may behold directly (v. 8).

Leader:
Jesus Christ is the Light of the world!
People:
JESUS CHRIST IS THE MANIFEST GOD!
Leader:
For in him the power of God's presence dwells!
People: AND FROM HIM THE LIGHT OF GOD'S GLORY POURS!
Collect
God of deepest mystery, time and again you have overcome the limitations of our minds and enlightened us as to your holy nature and will. Reveal yourself to us once more: that, inspired by your majestic holiness, we may become ennobled as your children and enabled as your servants. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
Prayer of Confession
God of wondrous mercy, we regretfully confess that we often use the natural limitations of our human minds and our obvious inability to understand you fully as an excuse to ignore you completely. Forgive us, O God, and point us once again to your self-manifestation in the Christ. Transform us with the strength of his example, even as he was transfigured by the power of your presence. In his holy name we pray. Amen
