God's patience and punishment
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
God's patience and punishment
Gospel Note:
Jesus' two sayings (both references to otherwise unknown historical events) and his parable here serve to make the same point: while no casual connection can be made between particular disasters that befall people and their sinfulness, and although individuals may survive unrepentant for a time, all because of God's patience, that patience will not last forever and eventually will be replaced by God's punishment and the unrepentants' perishing.
Liturgical Color:
Purple
Suggested Hymns:
In The Cross Of Christ I Glory
May God Bestow On Us This Grace
God, Whose Almighty Word
O God Of Earth And Altar

Lent 3
People are afraid, Lord.
Some people probably feel that if they know your
name they will be able to exert some form of
control over you.
When Moses asked for your name, you responded by
declaring yourself to be
the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac,
and the God of Jacob.
That is, you chose to name yourself in terms of
these personal relationships.
I like to think that you are also the God of
Michelle,
Gary,
Tara and Julia!
Control is not what is important here.
Repentance is what is important.
Forgiveness is what is important.
Your gracious love opens the door for us to come
to you. Time is precious and you are patient.
By your grace, move us from fear to faith,
then to life.
Amen.
