Good Luck? Bad Luck? Who Knows?

An old Chinese farmer had an old horse for tilling his fields. One day the horse ran away into the hills. The farmer's neighbors sympathized with the old man, saying, "Too bad. Bad luck."
The farmer replied, "Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?"
A week later the horse returned with a herd of wild horses from the hills, and this time the neighbors said, "Good luck!"
His reply was, "Good luck? Bad luck? Who knows?"
Then, when the farmer's son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he fell off its back and broke his leg. The neighbors said, "Too bad. Bad luck."
The farmer said, "Bad luck? Good luck? Who knows?"
Some weeks later the army marched into the village and took every young man in good health. When they saw the farmer's son with his broken leg, they said, "Go home."
Now was that Good luck? Bad luck? or Who knows?
Talk together: What did this story say to you? How can you change bad luck to good luck? There is a story in the Bible of Joseph's brothers selling him into slavery, bad luck! But at the end God meant it for good, good luck!
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us accept what is and see the good within it, as you did in the Joseph story. Amen.
