Imitating God, not humanity
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Based Upon Cycle C Lectionary Gospels
Gospel Theme:
Imitating God, not humanity
Gospel Note:
This selection of the ''Sermon on the Plain'' provides Luke's version of Jesus' ethical injunctions. The key to the passage is in vv. 35 and 36, which indicate that what underlies all of the preceding ''ethics of reversal'' is an ''ethics of imitation'': we are to do the opposite of what wrongdoers do to us precisely because in so doing we imitate God's kindness and mercy.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Oh, Love, How Deep
Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word
Jesus Lives! The Victory's Won
Now The Green Blade Rises
In Adam We Have All Been One
Praise And Thanks And Adoration

Epiphany 7
Gracious Lord,
Your kingdom plan is woven into the fabric of
history. It is clear that you always keep your
Word.
Joseph discovered this truth. Jesus Christ
brought it into focus.
You are still weaving your kingdom plan into the
fabric of history. We would like to be a part of
your plan but we are sometimes afraid of what
that might mean for us.
Love your enemies?
We are afraid to do that!
Our feelings of fear, doubt and insecurity
make us reluctant to trust.
Restore our confidence in your Word of Life.
Grant us the confidence to trust your promises
every day of our lives.
Then, each day, we will become more aware of
your presence.
Amen.
