Immediately They Left Their Nets And Followed Him

Advent, Christmas, Epiphany -- Cycle B
Thespian Theological Thoughts
Immediately!
It has long been a source of amazement to me that these fishermen just dropped everything and followed this carpenter from backwoods Galilee. What was it about Jesus that compelled these men to follow him?
Artistic notions and artifices to the contrary, I don't think Jesus walked around with some halo or aura around his head, and I imagine that physically he was pretty much indistinguishable from every other Palestinian Jew. Jesus would never have used hypnotism or other manipulations to compel obedience. So why then did these guys -- Andrew and Peter, James and John -- just leave their fishing business and follow him?
Have you ever met someone who made you feel that you were the most important person in the world? This is, I think, what meeting Jesus is like. When you are with Jesus, you have his full attention, interest, and love -- and you know that you matter to him. And if you matter to him, you are somebody!
There's not a lot of action in this play; five talking heads can be deadly, I fear. But I pray that you can have some fun with poor ol' Peter, and liven things up a bit. (The other day, I heard a preacher say that Jesus must have spent much of his time on earth saying, "Peeeterrr!" at the bumblings and stumblings of the "rock" on which he founded his church.)

Larry: Did you ever wonder about those Galilean fishermen who followed Jesus? The Bible says that "immediately they left their nets and followed him." What compelled these men to drop everything and follow this carpenter from Nazareth?
Our guests tonight on "Larry Ling Live!" are four fishermen: Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Before Jesus came to town, these guys were the backbone of Zebedee and Sons, Commercial Fisheries. But then, Jesus came into their lives and --Òimmediately -- these fishermen left their nets and followed this carpenter. Tonight we're going to find out what compelled these simple, hard-working men to do something so unexpected and outrageous.
(Peter, Andrew, James, and John enter stage left and sit around the table)
Larry: Thank you, gentlemen, for joining us tonight. Simon, son of John ...
Peter: (Stands up and pounds the table) Peter! Hey, the name is Peter, okay?
Andrew/James/John: (Together, in annoyance) Peeeterrr!
Peter: (Sits down) Sorry!
Larry: O-o-okay! (Glances at Peter as if to say "Who is this weirdo?") Um ... besides Peter, we have Andrew (Andrew nods to audience) ... and James (James nods to audience) ... and John (John nods to audience).
Andrew, let's start with you. What was it about this man Jesus that drew you to him so powerfully and dramatically?
Andrew: I don't know. It's hard to put into words. But when I met Jesus, I just knew. He is the Christ.
Peter: (Stands up) Of course he is the Christ! I told you so, Andrew.
Andrew/James/John: (Together) Peeeterrr!
(Peter sits down)
Larry: But how did you know that this carpenter from the sticks is the Messiah, Andrew?
Andrew: I just knew. When Jesus looked into my eyes, it seemed that he was looking deep into my soul, and that he knew and loved me better than anyone knows and loves me ... maybe even better than I know and love myself.
Larry: That must have been kind of a weird experience! Did anyone else feel that way?
John: It wasn't a weird experience at all, Larry. Being with Jesus was -- and is -- an experience of being known and loved more deeply than ever before in your life.
Larry: Ah, yes, "the disciple whom Jesus loved." John, you speak a lot about love. Is that what Jesus is all about?
John: Yes, it is, Larry. But it's not as the world defines love. The love of Jesus is total and unconditional and self-sacrificing. And it changes you!
Larry: What do you mean, John?
John: (Puts his hand on James' arm) Take me and my big brother James here, for example. We were known as "sons of thunder." Do you know why?
Larry: I thought it had something to do with your diet -- too much spicy Mexican chili, perhaps?
John: Nothing like that, Larry. We were called "sons of thunder" because we -- especially I --Òhad a bad temper. For instance, when we were traveling to Jerusalem, we passed through a Samaritan village, and they would not receive us. So James and I asked the Lord if he wanted us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume the village!
Larry: What did Jesus say to that?
James: Oh, he just quietly rebuked us, told us to be cool. Jesus was like that, you know. He never really got in your face when you did something stupid. Remember the time when Mom asked him if you and I could be granted the places of honor in the kingdom, John?
John: Yeah. Man, I was so embarrassed! If it had been up to me, Mom would've gotten the chewing out of her life! But Jesus was patient. He quietly tried to explain to us that it's not about seeking places of honor for ourselves or our families. It's about being a servant.
Larry: Wait, now, John, let's get back to what you said about the love of Jesus. You said it changes people. What did you mean?
John: Well, for me it has meant this: Knowing that I am loved so deeply and perfectly, I have become able to love others.
Larry: Do you mean that the love of Jesus cured your "sons of thunder" anger, John?
John: Well, the love of Jesus is a powerful motivator to change, Larry. I have to admit that my anger hasn't been cured completely. God is still working on me. But I know that, when I mess up, Jesus, who is faithful and just, will forgive me, and cleanse me from all unrighteousness if I confess my sins.
Larry: That's an interesting concept, John. Maybe you should write a letter about that.
John: Hmmmmm ... maybe I should.
Larry: Well, now, Peter. What have you got to say about this carpenter from Nazareth?
Peter: He is my Lord and my God.
Larry: Peter, you are the leader of this little band of fishermen and tax-collectors, right?
Peter: No, Jesus is our leader. I'm just the guy he put in charge of building his church.
Larry: That's fascinating! Why would Jesus appoint someone like you, Peter? You kept missing the point! And then, when the chips were down, you denied Jesus!
Peter: Why did he choose me? Larry, I haven't a clue!
Andrew: Peter, if I may? I think it comes back to what I was saying earlier. Jesus saw something in Peter which Peter couldn't even see in himself.
Larry: And what was that, Andrew?
Andrew: Jesus saw love and faithfulness -- and above all, sincerity. Peter, the first word Jesus said to you was "Follow," and what was the last word he said to you?
Peter: "Follow."
Andrew: And that's what you have done, Peter. Sometimes stumbling and bumbling, always impulsive and often missing the point ... but you have always followed Jesus.
Peter: Yep.
John: It's better to be a follower who fails than someone who fails to follow.
Peter: Yep.
Larry: I'm afraid we're running out of time here, guys. I'm so glad that you were able to join us this evening. And now, in one closing statement I'd like you to tell us why immediately you left your nets and followed Jesus.
Andrew: What compelled us to follow Jesus is ...
James: that when we were -- and are -- with Jesus ...
John: we really are with him, experiencing fully his total and unconditional love ...
Peter: and that makes each one of us know that we are loved, and that we are important ... no matter what we do!
Larry: Thank you, gentlemen. And good night for "Larry Ling Live!"
