In Jill St. John's novel, one of her characters says, "I believe the universe is up to something." This has a biblical aura about it, something in the style of our morning's passage from Isaiah 2:1--5. In spite of much evidence to the contrary, both statements believe that reality and history are purposefully driven: There will come a time when the nations "shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks" (2:2b).
