Is it lawful, Lord?
Prayer
Contemporary Lectionary Prayers
Cycle B
Gospel Note:
From the beginning of creation the ideal of marriage is for a
man and woman to be so joined in marriage that they become one
flesh. But because of the hardness of human hearts Moses allowed
for written divorce. Divorce divides what God intended to be
permanent, but by the grace of God, broken relationships can be
forgiven and a new relationship formed.
Liturgical Color:
Green
Suggested Hymns:
Look, The Sight Is Glorious
Crown Him With Many Crowns
Cradling Children In His Arm
Oh, Blest The House
For The Beauty Of The Earth
Proper 22 ù Pentecost 20 ù OT 27
Is it lawful, Lord?
Is it lawful to divorce?
Is it lawful to inflate a profit margin?
Is it lawful to shade the truth?
Is it lawful to win at all costs?
Is it lawful to sue your neighbor?
Is it lawful to segregate people
by their economic status?
Is it lawful to drive a gas-guzzling car?
Is it lawful to pursue tax loopholes?
Perhaps a better question would be:
"Is it right, Lord?"
How do you view our behavior?
Help us to ask the right questions.
Help us to seek both your forgiveness
and your will for our lives.
Amen.
