Jesus Clears The Clutter
Children's sermon
The Giant Book Of Children's Sermons
Matthew To Revelation
Object: a lot of clutter: some books, puzzles, toys, balls and bat, a radio, and the funny pages
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we have a common problem. The problem is called "clutter." I hear many parents complaining about this clutter problem their children. How many times have you heard your mother or father complain about your clutter and say, "Please pick it up and put it away." (let them answer) I also hear the youngsters saying, "What can I do? I don't have anything to do." How many of you have said that? (let them answer) Almost everyone. You can't find anything to do, but you are living in the middle of games, toys, newspapers, radios, balls, and books. Everywhere you look there is something. The only way to really enjoy something is to have only one thing at a time.
Let us suppose that you put everything away except one thing and then worked or played with that one thing. You would have fun with it or you would get it done. As long as you have a lot of things, it is hard to finish or play with any one of them.
That is what Paul found out about Jesus. He put everything else out of his mind and thought only about Jesus. He put away the idea of being rich, and he put away the idea of having a fast chariot with beautiful horses, and everything else that people wanted in his lifetime. He tried only to understand and love Jesus. It worked. Paul was happy. His life was not all cluttered up. He knew Jesus and why he suffered and died for us, and Paul was happy with that. He was so thrilled at his uncluttered life that he taught other people to live the same way. It was glorious. He even hopes that people like you and me will try it. Put Jesus first. When you love Jesus and worship him then your life is rich and full. You are never bored. I know boys and girls who are always looking for things to do and no matter how much they have it is not enough. These are boys and girls who need Jesus so that they can get rid of the clutter in their lives.
I hope that you will remember this, and if it ever happens to you and you wish that things could be different, maybe you can have your mother or father read you a story about Jesus. Then you will know how important God should be in your life.
