The Sermon:
In the Bible, there is a story of how Jesus used a boy's little lunch to feed 5,000 people. We can learn some things from this story. The first thing to learn is that God chooses to do his work using us to get it done. We are partners with God.
Some people think they have no talents. This is not so. Everyone has some way they can serve God and if it is given or done freely, no telling what God can do! God's work is done by people helping people.
Have you ever thought about:
• inviting someone to Sunday school and church?
• smiling at someone who looks sad or grouchy?
• telling your teacher you like the way they teach?
• giving your brother or sister a hug?
Maybe you can think of many more nice things to do. You'll never know just how much good you might do. Jesus can use the little we have. In Jesus' hands, little can be great if given. And Jesus uses boys and girls, too.
After the 5,000 people had eaten, Jesus said to the disciples: " 'Gather up the fragments left over so that nothing may be lost.' So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets" (John 6:12-13).
All those people had eaten and were full. Then Jesus told his disciples to gather up the leftovers. *There were twelve baskets of leftovers. This tells us that this indeed is a wonderful miracle, but it also tells us that we are not to waste anything. God gives, but we should not waste what he has given.
