Jesus Rescued Us
Children's sermon

Matthew To Revelation
Object: some rescue equipment like a firefighter's net or a big rope
Good morning, boys and girls. I have a real surprise for you this morning that I know you are going to like. How many of you have ever been to the fire department? (let them answer) Some of you have. How many of you have ever watched a show on television in which the building is on fire and someone is trapped on the sixth floor? (let them answer) That person has to jump if he is going to be saved. Almost all of you have seen shows like that. What do the people jump into? Is there a big pool of water or a giant sponge? (let them answer) You are right, they jump into the net. Let's hold up the net and see what it is really like. (take out the net and display it) It still seems dangerous jumping that far, but when you have the choice of either burning up or jumping I think that you would jump. We call that being rescued. If we understand how important it is that someone can rescue us from a fire, then maybe we can also understand how important it was for Jesus to do what he did.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus died for our sins. Sometimes that doesn't make sense to people. What Jesus really did was rescue us from dying. God knew that if we did not know how much he loved us, we would go the way the devil wanted us to go. The devil is tricky and he knows how to make us think that bad things are good and good things are bad. The devil was doing a good job, and people like you and me were following the devil. God had tried everything to show us what was happening, but we didn't listen. Finally God knew that there would have to be one thing done that would rescue and set us free us from the devil. If God was willing to die so that we would know how much he loved us, maybe we would turn around and follow him. That's what he did.
Jesus' dying on the cross is the best rescue that ever happened. He died so that we would see the trickiness of the devil and know that God really does love us as much as he said he does. In other words, Jesus rescued us just as firefighters rescue you with their net. Firefighters rescue you in this life but Jesus rescues you forever.
Will you think about how Jesus rescues us the next time you see a fire truck? Good.
