Mary said to Joseph, "I thought Jesus was with you!" Joseph replied, "I thought Jesus was with you." Mary and Joseph asked among the party in which they were traveling if anyone had seen Jesus, their son. Benjamin said, "The last time I saw him he was still in Jerusalem in the Temple." Quickly Mary and Joseph returned to the City where only three days before they had celebrated the Festival of the Passover. To everyone they passed on the way to the Temple, they asked about Jesus. "How old is he?" the strangers asked. Joseph replied, "He is twelve." At last they elbowed their way into the temple chambers where the teachers were and, to their surprise, listened to Jesus' questions and replies. Mary interrupted, "Jesus, what are you doing? We have been worried." Jesus looked up at his parents and smiled. "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know I would be in my Father's house?" Gently Joseph put his arm around Jesus' shoulder. "It is time to leave." Together Mary, Joseph, and Jesus returned to Nazareth where Jesus continued to ask questions that would help him know God's will and way.
Talk together: What does this story say to you? What would you like to know about God?
Prayer: Dear Lord, I am glad for Jesus' example of asking questions about your will and your way. Let me not think I understand your mystery so completely that I do not continue to seek and grow in knowledge and experience of your presence. Amen.
