Story Time At The Altar

Once upon a time there was a man named Job. One day his servant came running to Job and said, "Your donkeys, camels, goats, and sheep have been stolen and your servants killed." Job ran to his cattle, or where they had been, and it was true. He was sad to see his cattle gone and his servants killed. Then one of his friends ran to Job and said, "The wind blew your house down!" Job ran home, or where it had been, and it was true. He was sad to see his house gone. But when he saw that his house had fallen on his family, he cried. He pulled on his hair and tore his clothes, and sat on the ground for seven days and seven nights. His sadness was very great.
Then Job complained to God, for Job was a good man. He prayed and pleaded. He wanted an answer. Where was God when these awful things happened? His friends gave him answers, but they did not help. Job felt hopeless and sad. Why didn't God answer him?
Over and over Job called out to God. Over and over God was silent, and Job was very sad. Then one day a great whirlwind appeared and out of the whirlwind God said to Job, "Where were you, Job, when I created the heavens and the earth?" And at last Job was silent.
When God finished speaking, Job kneeled and confessed, "I did not understand things too wonderful for me. I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you." Job praised his Maker.
Talk together: Have you ever wondered, "Where is God when bad things happen?" What do you think?
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the song of the birds, the sounds of insects, the grass and the flowers, the stars and the moon, and all creation, showing us your wisdom, love, and imagination, especially Jesus, the Christ. Amen.
