Just Do It!
Drama
ThespianTheology
Lent/Easter
Hey, the Bible doesn't say anything about who ol' Ananias was, so he might have been the proprietor of a Syrian pizza shop with a nagging wife and three spoiled kids, huh?
Well, whatever. The point is that we seldom see the cosmic effects of our actions, but if God is asking us to do something, we'd better just do it!

Narrator: Once-upon-a-time, in the city of Damascus, there lived a man named Ananias ... Now Ananias wasn't a prominent citizen, and he wasn't rich and powerful; he just owned a little Syrian pizza shop (Ananias puts on his chef's cap), and he tried to make an honest buck. Just like a lot of us, Ananias had a wife ...
Wife's Voice: (Offstage) Ananias! (He cringes) Are you ever gonna fix that water stain on the ceiling?
Ananias: Yes, dear ...
Narrator: ... And he had three kids.
Wife's Voice: Ananias! (He cringes) Those kids are driving me crazy! I thought you were gonna talk to them about keeping their room clean and taking out the trash.
Ananias: Yes, dear ...
Narrator: But Ananias had one important thing going for him: the Lord Jesus! Ananias had met Jesus, and he asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior. And Ananias knew that Jesus was crucified, died, and rose again, so that Ananias and all believers might have forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
Ananias: (Looks heavenward) Thank you, Jesus!
Narrator: One day, as Ananias was working in his pizza shop (Ananias pantomimes making a pizza), the Lord spoke to him in a vision ... (Ananias freezes as he listens)
Voice of God: (Offstage) Ananias! Get up and go to the street called Straight, to the house of Judas, and look for a man named Saul of Tarsus. At this moment he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias -- that's you -- come and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.
Ananias: Saul of Tarsus? Oh, Lord, I've heard mighty bad things about that dude! He mutters threats and murder against your disciples --alike me! -- and he has put a real hurtin' on your saints in Jerusalem. And now I hear that he's come to Damascus to do the same to us here. Lord, this guy Saul is a bad dude ... Don't send me to him! I don't wanta die. I've got a wife and three kids to support here!
Voice of God: Saul won't hurt you, Ananias --
Ananias: Oh, no? What about Stephen, and all the others he put to death in Jerusalem? Pleeeease don't send me to Saul, Lord! (Falls to his knees)
Voice of God: Saul is expecting you, Ananias. I just told you that. I have great plans for Saul. He is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel.
Ananias: You're kidding, Lord! You're planning to use that scum-bag to preach your name around the world?
Voice of God: Exactly, Ananias! And I myself will show Saul how much he must suffer for my name.
Ananias: Oh, that's just great! I gotta go see this mass murderer and tell him that he's gonna suffer for the name of the one he's been persecuting? I don't think so!
Voice of God: Ananias, you must trust me ... Just do it!
Ananias: Well, all right, Lord ... if you say so. But I don't like this, I gotta tell you! (Stands up and exits stage left)
Narrator: So Ananias headed off for Straight Street. His knees were knocking together so loudly, people heard him coming two blocks away ... but he went, because the Lord told him to!
(Saul enters stage right, animated, but feeling his way with a cane. Ananias enters stage left, trembling with fear)
Saul: Who goes there?
Ananias: Oooh-oooh-oooh! (Cringes back)
Saul: Is someone there?
Ananias: B-b-b-brother Saul?
Saul: Yes, my brother?
Ananias: (Takes a deep breath and stands tall) Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way to Damascus, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. (Lays his hands on Saul) ... There! I did it! (Backs away, staring at Saul)
(Saul has a handful of poker chips; he drops his cane, puts his hands to his face, and lets the chips fall to the ground)
Saul: I can see ... Praise the Lord!
(Looks at Ananias, and moves to hug him; Ananias backs away at first, but finally they hug)
Ananias: Praise the Lord!
Saul: Come with me, brother Ananias. I need to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
(Ananias and Saul exit stage right, arm in arm)
Narrator: Saul went on to become the great Apostle Paul. (Saul enters stage right and moves downstage) No one person, apart from the Lord Jesus himself, had more influence on the Christian faith than Paul. He preached Christ throughout the Roman Empire, and his letters to the churches form a major part of the New Testament ...
But what about Ananias, the pizza man? (Ananias enters stage right and crosses to stage left) Well, he returned to Damascus, to his pizza shop ... and his wife ...
Wife's Voice: (Offstage) Ananias! Fix that water spot on the ceiling!
Narrator: ... and has three kids.
Wife's Voice: You kids clean up your room this instant! Just wait 'til your father gets home!
Narrator: But do you know what? Without quiet little Ananias -- who was willing to take a risk and just do what God asked him to do -- we might not have had the great Apostle Paul!
(Saul and Ananias come together center stage and hug)
Narrator: The moral of this story is: Whenever the Lord asks you to do something -- even if it seems a little scary ...
Saul/Ananias: Just do it!
