"Sarah, the drought has dwindled our food supply. There are difficult times ahead, but we'll survive," her mother assured her.
"Ha! Ha! Ha!" Sarah laughed until her belly ached -- or did she laugh because it ached?
"Sarah, you have all the qualifications: intelligence, personality, character references. There's only one hitch. Your skin's too dark! Sorry, we'll have to hire someone else for the position," the amiable manager smiled as he walked her to the door.
"Ha! Ha! Ha!" Sarah clenched her teeth, bit her lip, and laughed her hurt away.
